Choosing your Moving Cards

Moving Cards are usually sent in the first few weeks after a move, once the address is confirmed and post is arriving reliably. Some people send them just before instead, so nothing goes to the old address in the gap. They are counted by household, and the list is often shorter than expected — banks, utilities and subscriptions are updated online rather than by card, so these go to friends and family. The new address, and the date from which it applies, are the two details that matter.

Common questions.

When should change of address cards be sent?+
Most people send them in the first few weeks after moving, once the address is confirmed and post is arriving properly. Sending just before the move also works, and avoids anything going to the old address in the gap.
What should a change of address card include?+
The new address in full, the date from which it applies, and the names of everyone at the household. A new phone number is worth adding where it has changed, which it often has not.
How many moving cards do we need?+
Fewer than most people expect. Banks, utilities and subscriptions are updated online, so the cards go to friends and family. Counting by household rather than individual keeps the number down further.
Should a moving card include a photo of the new house?+
Many do, and it is a natural thing to include. A photograph taken in good light once you have moved in usually prints better than an estate agent's listing image, which is often heavily compressed.
Can moving cards double as a housewarming invitation?+
Yes, and it saves sending two things. The new address sits at the top with the party details below, which also means guests have the address on the same card they are being invited by.
Do businesses use change of address cards?+
Some do, for clients and suppliers, particularly where a move might otherwise be missed. The wording shifts to the business name and effective date, but the format is the same.
