Choosing your New Arrival Cards

New Arrival Cards are usually sent in the first few weeks after the birth, once a photograph everyone is happy with exists and the name is settled. Most families count households rather than individuals, so grandparents, aunts and uncles at the same address receive one card. Weight, length, date and time of birth are the details most often included, though many families leave some out. Christening Invitations are frequently printed later from the same design.

Common questions.

When should new arrival cards be sent?+
Usually within the first few weeks, once there is a photograph the family is happy with and the name is settled. There is no fixed deadline, and plenty of families send them a month or two on once life has calmed down.
What details go on a new arrival card?+
The baby's name, the date of birth, and usually weight and time of birth. Length is sometimes included. Many families keep it to name and date alone, which is entirely normal and photographs better on a simple card.
How many new arrival cards do we need?+
Count households rather than people, so relatives at the same address receive one between them. Spares are worth having, since these are the cards most often kept and asked for by people who were missed.
Should a new arrival card include a photo?+
Most do, and it is the reason the card is kept. A photograph from a camera or a recent phone prints well at card size; older or heavily cropped images can be too small. Every file is checked for resolution before printing.
Can new arrival cards be used for adoption or twins?+
Yes. The wording is simply adjusted — arrival rather than birth for an adoption, and two names and sets of details for twins. Any design can carry either.
Can we match new arrival cards to christening invitations?+
Many families do, printing both from the same design so the two announcements look related. The christening invitation usually follows some months later.
