Choosing your Christening Invitations

Christening Invitations are usually sent four to six weeks before the service, and earlier where godparents or family are travelling. They are commonly sent to a smaller list than a wedding, since many christenings are followed by a lunch or gathering with limited numbers. Both the service and whatever follows it are normally covered on the same card, with times for each. Families often print them from the same design as the New Arrival Cards sent earlier.

Common questions.

When should christening invitations be sent?+
Four to six weeks before the service is usual. Six to eight is more comfortable where godparents or family are travelling, or where the date falls near Christmas or Easter when churches are busy.
What should a christening invitation include?+
The child's name, the date, the church and the service time, and details of whatever follows with its own time and address. Godparents are sometimes named on the card, though that is a matter of preference.
How many christening invitations do we need?+
Count households rather than individuals. Christening lists are usually shorter than wedding lists, and often limited by the size of whatever gathering follows the service.
Do christening invitations need an RSVP?+
Where a meal or gathering follows, yes, since numbers affect catering. A reply-by date with a phone number or email on the card is normally enough without a separate reply card.
Are christening invitations different from naming ceremony invitations?+
Only in wording. A naming ceremony is non-religious, so the church and service are replaced by the venue and the ceremony itself. The same designs suit both.
Can christening invitations match our new arrival cards?+
They often do, printed from the same design so the two feel connected. The new arrival card announces the birth and the christening invitation follows some months later.
