Choosing your Graduation Cards

Graduation Cards are used two ways: to announce the result and to invite people to a celebration, and many families print both from one design. They are usually sent shortly after results are confirmed rather than before, since the wording depends on the outcome. Quantities are counted by household. A photograph in gown and cap is the most common choice, though many families prefer the card to carry the name, the institution and the award alone.

Common questions.

When should graduation cards be sent?+
After results are confirmed, since the wording depends on the classification or award. Where the card is also an invitation to a celebration, three to four weeks before that event is the usual timing.
What should a graduation card say?+
The graduate's name, the qualification and the institution, and the year. Where it doubles as an invitation, the date, time and venue of the celebration are added below.
How many graduation cards do we need?+
Count households rather than individuals. Most families send to relatives and close friends rather than a wide list, so quantities tend to be smaller than for a wedding or party.
Should a graduation card include a photo?+
A photograph in gown and cap is the most common choice and makes the card more likely to be kept. Official photographs are usually high enough resolution to print well at card size.
Can one card be both an announcement and an invitation?+
Yes, and it is a common choice. The announcement sits at the top and the party details below, which saves sending two separate things to the same people.
Are graduation cards only for university?+
No. The same designs are used for school leavers, apprenticeships, professional qualifications and any other completed course. Only the wording changes.
